In tight vote for Speaker, Johnson could potentially sweep four GOP votes from Colorado

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice A slight Republican margin in the U.S. House will make Speaker Mike Johnson's re-election bid later this week potentially a must-see. Republicans hold a 220-215 seat advantage in the U.S. House, but one Republican has resigned, and two other Republicans have indicated their opposition to Johnson. It takes 218 votes to win the Speaker vote. If Johnson is unable to swing either of the defectors, he doesn't win the Speaker vote — assuming Democratic members don't lend their support. U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, is at least one who has withheld his support for Johnson thus far and told Fox News there were others. He has suggested alternative Speaker options of Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., or Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, both of whom have previously m...

‘We cannot live in a world with a nuclear Iran,’ newly-elected Rep. Evans says on Middle East

By Marc Rod | Jewish Insider Rep.-elect Gabe Evans (R-CO), a Colorado state House member and Army veteran, is set to bring personal experience as a service member in the Middle East, under fire from Iranian rockets, to Capitol Hill in January. Evans, as a helicopter pilot in the Colorado Army National Guard, operated in nine countries in the Middle East in support of the Afghanistan war — though he never personally deployed inside the country. He told Jewish Insider in a recent interview that working with U.S. partners and allies in the Middle East was a key element of his time in the region, as was working to prevent Iranian-backed terrorism and destabilization and maintain stability and governance in the midst of the Arab Spring. Having personally come under attack from Ira...

Evans: ‘America must prioritize deporting gangsters, not grandmas’

By Gabe Evans | Commentary, The Colorado Sun In a recent viral moment, the mayor of Denver, Mike Johnston, threatened to deploy local cops and thousands of Coloradans for a “Tiananmen Square moment” to stop the next administration’s strong immigration policies.  As a Coloradan, former Denver-area cop, grandson of an immigrant family and the next congressman for Colorado’s 8th Congressional District, I strongly support a secure border and strong immigration policies, including immediate deportation for criminals or freeloaders.  For those who are contributing to our society, not causing problems, and want to legally join the American dream, I do not support immediate deportation or family separation. As the grandson of an immigrant from Chihuahua, I know that Am...

Final price tag of race in Colorado’s highly competitive 8th Congressional District: $40 million

By Jesse Paul | The Colorado Sun The final price tag of the race in Colorado’s highly competitive 8th Congressional District this year was about $40 million, with three-quarters of that sum being spent by super PACs.  Most of the money — or about $24 million — was spent to benefit incumbent U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo, a Democrat. But it wasn’t enough, as she lost to Republican state Rep. Gabe Evans by about 2,500 votes, or about 1 percentage point. Caraveo’s campaign raised about $8.1 million for her reelection bid, spending all but about $90,000 of that through Election Day, according to her campaign finance report filed Thursday with the Federal Election Commission. The report reflected fundraising and spending from Oct. 17 through Nov. 25.  READ THE FULL STORY AT THE...

U.S. Rep-elect Evans, SBOE Member-elect Navarro to be featured in town hall

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice A town hall meeting featuring Congressman-elect Gabe Evans and State Board of Education Member-elect Yazmin Navarro, both of the 8th Congressional District, will take place on Friday, Dec. 6, from 1-3 p.m. The town hall is being hosted and offered by Wayne Walvoord, the regional captain in Northern and Eastern Colorado for the Convention of States. Evans unseated Democrat U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo in a race decided by 2,449 votes among 333,609 total votes. He gathered 48.96% of the vote, edging out Caraveo by 0.74%. The race did not qualify for a mandatory recount, as it was 0.24% beyond the 0.50% margin to trigger a recount. Navarro was part of a right turn for the State Board of Education, as Republicans won three of the four races on the...

Gabe Evans on his 8th District victory, immigration and plans for Congress

By  Gabrielle Franklin | Fox 31 News It’s a Colorado race that has shaken up the outlook on the balance of power in Congress and the makeup of the state’s congressional delegation. Gabe Evans unseats Yadira Caraveo in Colorado’s 8th Congressional District

By Jesse Paul, The Colorado Sun Republican state Rep. Gabe Evans has unseated Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo in Colorado’s highly competitive 8th Congressional District, a win that represents the biggest victory for the GOP in Colorado since 2014. Evans was leading Caraveo with 49% of the vote to her 48% at 3:15 p.m. on Sunday when Caraveo conceded. They were separated by about 2,500 votes. “It’s been the honor of a lifetime to serve the people of Colorado’s 8th District,” Caraveo, a pediatrician and former state lawmaker, said in a written statement. “While this isn’t the outcome we had hoped for, the work is not over. I look forward to returning to Washington to finish out this term.” Evans said in a written statement that he was incredibly humbled. “It is an honor to...

Republican Gabe Evans now holds a lead of 2,529 votes in 8th District U.S. House race

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice In a latest report from the Colorado secretary of state's office, Republican Gabe Evans has pulled ahead of Democrat Yadira Caraveo in the 8th District U.S. House race. Evans now holds 49.03% of votes, with Caraveo trailing at 48.21%, which presently places the race outside the threshold of an automatic recount. The 2,529-vote lead is a significant swing from where the race sat just a few days ago. The one-term U.S. Rep. Caraveo once led by a somewhat comfortable 1.59% margin. On Thursday, Evans narrowed the deficit to 2,096, which represented less than one-tenth of 1% of all votes to have been counted. A day earlier, Caraveo had a 3,817-vote lead, when an estimated 16.63% of the vote remained unreported. The 8th District is typically view...

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Gabe Evans is closing in fast on Democrat Yadira Caraveo, and his campaign believes he will pull out victory in the 8th District U.S. House race. A race the one-term U.S. representative Caraveo once led by a somewhat comfortable 1.59% margin has been closed to a 0.44% difference between Evans and Caraveo. As of late Friday, Evans trails by 1,321 votes. "With late ballots trending toward Gabe and with tens of thousands of uncounted ballots remaining across the district, we are confident that Gabe will win," said Alan Philp, a spokesperson for the Evans campaign. Caraveo’s lead has declined by 0.83%, as Evans now behind by 2,096 votes

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice It is officially nearly two full days after the closing of polls on Election Night, but who the winner will be in Colorado's 8th District U.S. House race remains undecided. Republican challenger Gabe Evans presently trails Democrat Yadira Caraveo by 2,096 votes, less than one-tenth of 1% of all votes to have been counted in the district. In the past 24 hours, Caraveo's lead has gone from what could have been comfortably outside the criteria for a mandatory recount to nearing it. She leads Evans now by just 0.76%. Her lead was at 1.59% at one point on Wednesday, back when she had a 3,817-vote lead. An estimated 16.63% of votes in the race have not been reported, meaning there still could be considerable change. The 8th District is typically...
