Law Enforcement Under Fire for Upholding Federal Immigration Laws

By Luige del Puerto | The Denver Gazette Phil Weiser's suit targets Mesa County Deputy Alexander Zwinck for allegedly violating state laws that prohibit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. The unpaid, weeks-long suspension of a deputy sheriff out of Mesa County for sharing information with federal agents has raised questions about how local authorities must navigate a state law that bars cooperation with immigration enforcers. More notably, it's unclear whether the impositions of the new law also mean limiting access by local officers to the more expansive federal databases — something the Mesa County deputy had cited as a major reason for cooperating with multiple agencies.  The law, expanded this year, expressly prohibits all Colorado state agencies an...

Shots Fired as ICE Operation Turns Violent in Colorado

By Nick Smith | The Gazette Two immigrants suspected to be in the country illegally are on the run after allegedly attempting to ram their vehicle into law enforcement officials during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation Thursday in the Black Forest area, according to an ICE spokesperson. An officer reportedly fired three shots into the vehicle, which fled the scene and was later found abandoned, the spokesperson said. No injuries were reported. A shelter-in-place order was issued in Black Forest around 10:30 a.m. Thursday for a quarter-mile radius in the 9900 block of Burgess Road between Windmill and Greentree roads, according to Peak Alerts and the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. "Secure your home/business and stay away from doors and windows. Shelter...

‘Not a side budget anymore’: English learner costs surge in public schools

By Aaron Gifford | The Epoch Times Federal and state laws mandate accommodations for all English language learners in public schools. Despite federal effectiveness at curbing illegal immigration, most states still allocate extra money for students learning English, regardless of whether they are here legally. All states apply a per-pupil funding formula for local districts. Above that base rate, 47 states and the District of Columbia provide additional money for English language learners. The expanded rates range from $904 to $16,161 per student if that pupil is also low-income, according to the Learning Policy Institute, which estimates there are more than 5 million English learners across K–12 public education. That includes nearly half the student population in the Dallas...

Colorado’s Medicaid growth is colliding with fiscal reality

By Shaina Cole | Contributing Writer A new report from the Common Sense Institute (CSI) warns that Colorado’s Medicaid program is on an unsustainable path—driven by rapid expansion at the state level and compounded by shrinking federal support. The warning comes as lawmakers prepare for a possible special session to address the state’s growing budget deficit. State policy has driven major cost growth Since 2019, Colorado has enacted 182 healthcare-related laws, with 21 of them expanding Medicaid eligibility or benefits. According to CSI’s July 2025 report, these expansions alone add approximately $158 million in recurring annual state costs. In total, the new legislation contributes around $858 million per year in additional Medicaid-related spending. Only 36% of that new spend...

Democrat-Led States Reverse Course on Health Coverage for Illegals

By Cooper Williamson | Blaze Media States will be ending their programs for illegal immigrants, saving millions. Since around 2020, Washington, D.C., and seven states have opened their health care programs to illegal aliens. However, since President Trump's administration began, some states have abruptly changed their policy positions. According to the Associated Press, California, Illinois, and Minnesota, all heavily Democrat-run states, have announced that they will be scaling back or ending their Medicaid programs for illegal aliens. Illinois will begin slashing its Medicaid availability immediately for illegal immigrants ages 42-64 for an estimated $404 million in savings. Minnesota likewise will be ending the program for adult illegal immigrants immediately. It is e...

Colorado AG Weiser sues Mesa County deputy for helping ICE make arrest

By Colleen Slevin | Fox31 DENVER (AP) — Colorado’s Democratic attorney general on Tuesday sued a sheriff’s deputy for allegedly helping federal immigration agents find and arrest a college student who had an expired visa. Attorney General Phil Weiser also disclosed that his office is investigating whether other law enforcement officers on a regional drug task force the deputy worked on have been sharing information to help federal agents make immigration arrests in violation of state law limiting cooperation in immigration enforcement. The federal government has sued Colorado over such laws. On June 5, Mesa County Deputy Alexander Zwinck allegedly shared the driver’s license, vehicle registration and insurance information of the 19-year-old nursing student in a Signal chat us...

Schlichter: No amnesty, no compromise, no surrender

By Kurt Schlichter | Commentary, Townhall There is cringe, and then there is the DIGNITY Act. It’s one of those stupid bills whose authors turn its title into a stupid acronym, but this latest amnesty proposal doesn’t make an acronym out of “DIGNITY”; fittingly, it makes it out of the Spanish word “DIGNIDAD” (Dignity) and stands for “Dignity for Immigrants while Guarding our Nation to Ignite and Deliver the American Dream.” We should ignite it all right, and deliver it to be used as a suppository, not just because of that idiocy, but because there’s so much more to hate. Basically, it’s a free ride for illegal aliens in exchange for enforcement that will never happen as soon as Democrats or a soft Republican takeover, another of those “I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburge...

Tracking the untracked: The dangerous fallout of Biden’s broken migrant child system

By Shaina Cole | Contributing Writer, Rocky Mountain Voice Each year, children continue to arrive at the southern border without anyone to look after them. They’re officially called unaccompanied alien children—or UACs—but behind that label are thousands of kids trying to navigate an immigration system meant for adults.  Many are handed off to sponsors with little vetting, and some end up trafficked, working illegal jobs, or worse. The surge in vulnerable children Back in the early 2000s, the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) was handling fewer than 8,000 unaccompanied kids a year. But that’s changed dramatically.  By 2022, that figure had climbed to over 128,000. The following year saw more than 113,000 children placed with sponsors across the U.S. As of Jul...
