Coloradans get their chance to scrap sanctuary laws with ballot measure

By Colorado Peak Politics, Commentary Detainees at the Aurora immigration facility escaped this week and are still at large but the media could care less except to fuel a fight between local law enforcement and ICE. Reporters aren’t the least bit curious how the two escapees, and only those two, knew that one back door was unlocked during a power failure. Why was there a power failure and how does that affect the security of the center? So-called journalists don’t seem to care enough to find out. How does the surrounding community feel about the fact that local police refused to respond when called? Or at the very flipping least, why Aurora PD couldn’t even issue a BOLO alert for their officers to be on the lookout? And while we’re grandstanding, since when does the media...

Aurora authorities ‘declined’ to help search for 2 illegal aliens who escaped Colorado detention facility: ICE

By Christina Shaw | Fox News Authorities in Aurora, Colorado, are allegedly declining to help U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) locate two illegal immigrants who escaped from the Denver Contract Detention Facility on Tuesday, the agency said. Illegal immigrants Joel Jose Gonzalez-Gonzalez, 32, and Geilond Vido-Romero, 24, escaped from the facility at some point on Tuesday after they were accounted for during a 2 p.m. facility-wide count. The Aurora Police Department shared a document with Fox News Digital that said staff at the facility became aware of the escapees at approximately 12:35 a.m. on Wednesday. It also said that an Aurora police officer responded to an "outside agency assist" at 5:13 a.m. on Wednesday. Aurora Police Public Information Officer ...

Gaines: Journalists conflate all ‘immigrants’ in deportation reporting

By Cory Gaines | Complete Colorado As an undergrad, I worked many a job, often alongside people who were not born here in the United States.  Some were here legally, some not.  They comprised a variety of ages, life experiences, dreams, fears,  etc.–just as you’d expect with any other group of humans. They were not a uniform mass of humanity.  Why then, do some Colorado journalists seem so eager to make them one? Immigration has been a big story here in Colorado.  All the more so lately as President Trump has ramped up enforcement of federal immigration laws.  Many in Colorado’s left-leaning press have risen to the challenge of reporting on it.  Breathless, dramatic stories abound, with an extra special focus on those who might garner the most sympathy.  Not pr...

Judge rejects Denver Public Schools’ attempt to block Trump ICE guidance

By Melanie Asmar | Chalkbeat Colorado A federal judge on Friday rejected Denver Public Schools’ attempt to reinstate a federal policy that treated schools as “sensitive locations” where immigration enforcement should only take place if there is immediate danger to the public. U.S. District Court Judge Daniel D. Domenico said there is little practical difference between the prior policy, the last iteration of which was issued in 2021 under former President Biden, and a pair of memos issued by the Trump administration in January. “The concern was that there would be no limitations or no protections for schools, necessarily, under the new memo,” Domenico said in a ruling from the bench. “That is an overstatement. And the fact that there have been no actions on school property in the ...

The U.S. House Committee on Government and Reform has asked Johnston to testify before the panel on March 5. Douglas Co. declares support for bill allowing Colorado law enforcement to work with ICE

By Noah Festenstein | The Denver Gazette Douglas County law enforcement officials on Wednesday declared support for legislation to flip a state law that has barred local officials from working with federal immigration agents. If approved by the Democrat-controlled legislature, it would reinstate a bill allowing local law enforcement to work with federal immigration officials with a focus on those who commit crimes. That bill was repealed in 2013. State Sen. Mark Baisley, Rep. Max Brooks and Rep. Chris Richardson are trying to garner support for Senate Bill 25-047 but realize it will be difficult to get it passed. READ THE FULL STORY AT THE DENVER GAZETTE

Colorado landlord blocked from discriminating against allegedly illegal tenants: ‘The Does’

By Amanda Pampuro  | Courthouse News A Colorado judge on Tuesday granted a Venezuelan couple’s request for an injunction barring their landlord from discriminating against them due to their immigration status after their landlord agreed to the stipulations. “Since the Doe family moved in, the defendants have treated them as second-class tenants due to their perceived citizenship and immigration status and that is intolerable under Colorado law,” said the couple’s attorney, Anna Kurtz with the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado. The couple, who sued their landlord anonymously in the District Court for Arapahoe County on Jan. 28, claimed landlord Avi Schwalb and property manager Nancy Dominguez used their tenants' immigration status to intimidate them. By Maddie Rhodes | KDVR-TV Fox 31 News U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement targeted over 100 members of the Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua, for arrest and detention as part of a multi-location immigration enforcement operation in Aurora and Denver Wednesday morning.  This operation, which the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Rocky Mountain Division is calling the “Return to Sender Operation,” took at least 10 people into custody at the Cedar Run Apartments at 888 S. Oneida St. in Denver, according to a DEA spokesperson on scene.   The DEA Rocky Mountain Division said this was part of the operation that was expected to start in Aurora on Jan. 30. This operation was reportedly delayed because information was leaked and posed security threats. ...
