After the release, former CIA Director John Brennan and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper wrote in the New York Times to deny the allegations and insisted that they never relied on the Steele dossier. The column only reaffirmed the level of dishonesty and duplicity that marked their tenures in office. (The Times still printed this claim despite being demonstrably untrue).
