Democrats Would Have Sacrificed Swalwell to Target GOP Lawmakers

By Matt Vespa | Commentary, Townhall Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), having nothing left to lose, finally decided to resign from Congress. He didn’t specify when, so stay tuned. However, he’s indicated that he’s leaving. Rep. Tony Gonzalez (R-TX), who was already planning to leave after losing in a primary following an affair with a staffer that led to her suicide. Reps. Cory Mills (R-FL) and Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) are also at risk for ethics violations; Cherfilus-McCormick is accused of stealing millions from FEMA. These four were likely the target of the purge, probably the only motion with substantial bipartisan support.  So, what would have happened? Well, given what was brewing before Swalwell decided to call it quits, Democrats were scheming—what else is new—...

DIGNITY Act debate: What’s in the bill raising concerns on amnesty and enforcement

By Brianna Lyman | Commentary, The Federalist I read the bill. And frankly, it might be worse than just amnesty. Despite President Donald Trump winning on the promise of “mass deportations,” a handful of spineless Republicans, alongside Democrats, are trying to push a mass amnesty act known as the DIGNIDAD Act — or, for English speakers, the DIGNITY Act. The legislation is billed as not being amnesty, but would give millions of illegal aliens — both so-called DREAMers/DACA and non-DREAMers/DACA — a legal status. But co-sponsor Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar, R-Fla., insists it’s not amnesty, so much so that she’s screaming at people on X to “READ. THE. BILL. BEFORE. YOU. OPEN. YOUR. MOUTH.” So I read the bill. And frankly, it might be worse than just a...

Rahm Emanuel Warns Democrats Have Lost Focus On Working Class

By Jay Caruso | Washington Examiner Rahm Emanuel has never been mistaken for a shrinking violet. As former President Bill Clinton‘s senior adviser, former President Barack Obama’s chief of staff, and the mayor of Chicago, he operates with a bluntness that has made him enemies on both sides of the aisle. So, when he sits down on a podcast and unloads on the Democratic Party of which he is a member, from the right, it is worth paying attention, even if you factor in that he is almost certainly running for president in 2028 and has every reason to position himself as the adult in the room. He is not wrong. In a wide-ranging conversation on the Reason podcast, The Fifth Column, with Michael Moynihan and Matt Welch, Emanuel laid out a critique ...

DHS Chief Floats Ending International Flights To Sanctuary Cities

By Joseph Chalfant | Townhall Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin unveiled a new proposal on Monday night to eliminate Customs and Border Patrol at international airports in sanctuary cities, effectively ending all international travel from the location. https://twitter.com/BillMelugin_/status/2041280851418165306?s=20 https://twitter.com/Osint613/status/2041294053132657079?s=20 “If they are a sanctuary city, should they really be processing customs into their city?” Mullin asked Fox News’ Bret Baier. “Seriously, if they are a sanctuary city and they are receiving international flights, and we’re asking them to partner with us at the airport, but once they walk out of the airport, they’re not going to enforce immigration policy? Maybe we need to h...

Report Suggests ActBlue Misled Congress On Foreign Donation Safeguards

By Brianna Lyman | The Federalist ‘This presents a substantial risk for ActBlue.’ ActBlue told Congress in 2023 that it took “multilayered” steps to “root out” illegal donations from foreign citizens. But it turns out “some of the steps … described were not always followed,” according to a new report from The New York Times (NYT). ActBlue Chief Executive Regina Wallace-Jones claimed in a 2023 letter to Congress that ActBlue conducted “‘multilayered’ screenings of contributions that helped ‘root out’ those from overseas,” the New York Times reported. Such screening claimed to have included processing donations that came from foreign mailing addresses only if the donor had a U.S. passport number. Wallace-Jones also reportedly told Congress that ActBlue would refund don...

Critics Question Why States Share Voter Data With Leftist Groups But Not DHS

By: Breccan F. Thies | Commentary, The Federalist ERIC has 25 member states and the District of Columbia — only three are run by Republicans. Each of the Democrat-run states has senators arguing against passing the SAVE America Act. Democrat senators claim it is an unconstitutional invasion of privacy that the SAVE America Act requires states to share voter rolls and requisite identifying information with the federal government in order to check for noncitizens, but many of their states already share the same data with left-wing third party organizations. Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., argued against the bill on the Senate floor, stating, “States would be required to report their full voter rolls to Department of Homeland Security and certify that there are no non-citi...

Senate Democrats Reject Voter ID Amendment Despite Prior Support

By Brianna Lyman | The Federalist Forty-seven Democrats voted against a photo ID amendment on Thursday despite Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer previously claiming that he was supportive of photo ID. Sen. Jon Husted (R-OH) introduced an amendment to the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act that would simply require photo ID to vote. Acceptable forms of ID include an unexpired driver’s license with a photo, a valid passport, a military ID, an unexpired state-ID card, among others. The measure needed 60 votes to pass but only received 53 “AYE’s.” Schumer claimed the amendment would “impose the single strictest voter ID law in America.” “This radical amendment would toss out every single voter ID requirement in all 50 states for fed...

Poll Shows 83% of Voters Support Election Day Ballot Deadlines

By: Maisey Jefferson | The Federalist While the Supreme Court on Monday expressed skepticism about states accepting mail-in ballots that arrive after Election Day, an overwhelming majority of voters have already decided against the practice, according to a recent poll conducted just days before the high court heard oral arguments in Watson v. RNC. As The Federalist’s Shawn Fleetwood reported, Watson “deals with a challenge to a Mississippi law authorizing absentee ballots to be accepted up to five days after Election Day so long as they are postmarked before or on the day of the contest.” A survey of 1,600 likely voters conducted on behalf of the Honest Elections Project earlier this month found that 93 percent of Republicans, 83...

GOP Lawmakers Question Cost and Strategy Behind $200 Billion Pentagon Request

By Jack Hunter | Responsible Statecraft Some who would otherwise support the war say they have no idea what the huge supplemental budget request is supposed to pay for The Pentagon is asking Congress for another $200 billion for the war on Iran, which is almost a quarter of the annual U.S. defense budget. Democrats are largely, and predictably, against it. But what about Republicans? While many say they support the president’s war (and they certainly do not want to allow a vote on it), Republicans in varying degrees embraced the mantle of fiscal conservatism. This supplemental request would be in addition to the more than a trillion approved late last year, including a $150 billion add-on, money that the Pentagon is ...

Conservative Victories Require Primary Challenges Within the GOP to Root Out the RINOs

By: Shawn Fleetwood | Commentary, The Federalist Until conservatives root out the rot within their own party, the D.C. status quo will continue to remain the same. Another week in American politics wouldn’t be complete without an elected Republican betraying constituents. That’s what happened on Tuesday when Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, announced her opposition to the latest iteration of the SAVE Act. The bill (now the “SAVE America Act”) seeks to mandate widely supported photo ID and proof-of-citizenship requirements in federal elections. In her “principled stand” against what she called efforts to “have federalized elections,” Murkowski referenced previous attempts by Democrats “to advance sweeping election reform legislation in 2021” — whi...
