Starting that day, every adult boarding a commercial domestic flight or entering certain secure federal facilities will need to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another form of accepted identification such as a U.S. passport. Passed in 2005 in response to the 9/11 attacks, the REAL ID Act aimed to tighten federal identification standards. But the rollout has been marked by state resistance, logistical challenges and privacy concerns. On May 7, passengers will need a Real ID symbol on their driver’s license or other form of acceptable identification to get through airport security. Those without proper identification may face delays, additional screening and may not be allowed into the security checkpoint. FOX31 found many travelers at Denver International Airport had questions about Real ID requirements. “I don’t know what is it for,” said one concerned airline passenger. But the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, passed by the House in 2024 and under Senate review in 2025, alongside the REAL ID Act’s looming May 7, 2025, deadline, has exposed a personal struggle that highlights a broader issue.  The SAVE Act demands photo ID and proof of U.S. citizenship—like a REAL ID, passport, or birth certificate—to vote in federal elections.
