Dem’s VP hopeful Walz to attend fundraiser in Denver along five-stop, multi-state tour this week

Tim Walz, named last week by Vice President Kamala Harris as her running mate, will make Denver a destination this week in advance of the Democratic National Convention. It is part of a multi-stop fundraising trip from coast-to-coast, beginning Tuesday in California, where Walz plans to speak to the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees at its Los Angeles convention, according to several media reports. Following the stop in California, Walz will appear at Democratic fundraisers in Denver and Boston, Mass., on Wednesday and then will be off to Newport, R.I., and Southampton, N.Y., for two more fundraisers on Thursday, The Washington Times reports. Finance manager who served for four decades has retired from Town of Brush

By Robin Northrup | Brush News-Tribune The City of Brush celebrated the dedicated career of Joanne Gosselink, the town’s finance manager, at a retirement open house held at The Course at Petteys Park. Gosselink, who has served the town for 42 years, is set to retire and says her last day will be July 31. Despite stepping down, Gosselink will continue to contribute to the community as a member of the Brush Rodeo Association Board. When asked about her plans after retiring, she said she has no plans yet but may do some traveling. She added that she will take some time for herself and will be bringing out her craft supplies. By Thomas Mitchell | Westword A proposed initiative that would have given concealed-carry rights to marijuana users won't appear on the November ballot, according to the Colorado Secretary of State's Office. Organizers for the campaign had until August 5 to turn in the 124,238 signatures needed for the initiative to qualify for the election. Although three other campaigns submitted signatures right before the deadline, Initiative 147: Criteria for Obtaining Concealed Handgun Permit wasn't one of them. The initiative, pushed by Colorado-based Guns for Everyone, would have removed marijuana from the "unlawful use" category on concealed handgun permit applications. By Tori Mason | CBS Colorado The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is contacting people who attended a puppy adoption event last month in one Colorado city. The health department is screening attendees after a puppy tested positive for rabies on Wednesday. CDPHE says the rabies-positive puppy came from Texas and has since been euthanized. The puppy was part of an adoption event with its 11 littermates at Moms and Mutts Colorado Rescue for Pregnant and Nursing Dogs, located at 2721 West Oxford Avenue in Englewood on July 20. By TARA COPP | Associated Press, via Fox 31 News An Osprey crash in Australia that killed three Marines, including one from Colorado, was caused by multiple pilot errors during a near mid-air collision, a military investigation has found. It also found that squadron leadership had permitted “a culture that disregarded safety of flight.” Two Marines pilots were killed by the Aug. 27 crash: Capt. Eleanor V. LeBeau, 29, and Maj. Tobin J. Lewis, 37, who was born and raised in Conifer, Colorado. A third Marine, crew chief Cpl. Spencer R. Collart, 21, was killed as he “heroically re-entered the burning cockpit of the aircraft in an attempt to rescue the trapped pilots,” the investigators said in a report released late Friday. Growing government debt is bigger threat to economy than climate change, CBO says

By Stephen Dinan | The Washington Times The rapidly rising federal debt will do substantially more damage to the U.S. economy in coming years than climate change, the Congressional Budget Office said, putting stark figures on the size of the danger. The CBO said Friday that if Uncle Sam’s debt grows as it projects, it would reduce the size of the economy by 3.2% in 30 years. Climate change would sap it of 1%, as measured by gross domestic product. The CBO released the data in response to a question from Sen. Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, the top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee.
