Huge crowds await a total solar eclipse in North America. Clouds may spoil the view

By Marcia Dunn | The Washington Times MESQUITE, Texas (AP) — Millions of spectators along a narrow corridor stretching from Mexico to the U.S. to Canada eagerly awaited Monday’s celestial sensation — a total eclipse of the sun — even as forecasters called for clouds. The best weather was expected at the tail end of the eclipse in Vermont and Maine, as well as New Brunswick and Newfoundland. It promised to be North America’s biggest eclipse crowd ever, thanks to the densely populated path and the lure of more than four minutes of midday darkness in Texas and other choice spots. Almost everyone in North America was guaranteed at least a partial eclipse, weather permitting. READ THE FULL STORY AT THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz calls on Colorado Republicans to ‘stand with President Trump’

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice PUEBLO -- Don't let it be said Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz can't read a room. As he stepped to the stage to deliver a keynote address to Colorado Republicans here Saturday, he could have stopped after his first few words. "This is Donald Trump's party, and I am a Donald Trump Republican," Gaetz started. Delegates immediately erupted in applause for the self-described firebrand in Congress, brought to Colorado by another firebrand, his seatmate in Congress. "It is hard to talk about the good coming out of Colorado, without talking about my favorite Congresswoman, Lauren Boebert," Gaetz said. He also joined an endorsement by Trump for Colorado Republican Party Chairman Dave Williams, who is seeking Colorado's 5th District seat i...

Voters express concern over mail-in ballots after major postal office delays

By Misty Severi | Washington Examiner Voters have expressed concern over the speed of the United States Postal Service, which has seen significant delays in recent months, as the country prepares for the 2024 presidential election. The voters are largely concerned about the speed of mail-in ballots, and whether they would arrive at their destinations in time to be counted. However, the U.S. Postal Service said it would use “a robust and proven process to ensure proper handling and delivery of all Election Mail, including ballots,” for November. USPS also apologized for the service interruptions and delays seen in the past six months, which have been attributed to a roof collapse, the transition to new processing equipment, and “executional complications ar...

Colorado GOP ejects reporter from its state assembly, calling news outlet’s coverage ‘very unfair’

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics The Colorado Republican Party on Saturday had law enforcement remove a reporter for the Colorado Sun from the GOP's state assembly in Pueblo because the party's chairman believes the outlet's reporting has been "very unfair." A Pueblo County sheriff's deputy escorted Sandra Fish, a long-time political and data reporter for the nonprofit news organization, from the Southwest Motors Events Center on the state fairgrounds, where thousands of Republican delegates from throughout the state convened to conduct party business. Fish, who has reported on both major parties' political assemblies for years, left the building when requested. READ THE FULL STORY AT COLORADO POLITICS

Efforts to close Boulder Airport stunted by community support, federal requirements

By Alex Edwards | The Denver Gazette A small single-engine aircraft approaches Hep Ingram's house in northeast Boulder recently, clawing for altitude. Its engine screams in defiance of gravity. And ever so slowly, it drifts closer and closer to flying right over the top of Ingram's home. “This guy is way north of where he should be,” he said. As it approaches, Ingram’s voice is overpowered and he has to wait for the plane to pass over before finishing his thought. During a 45 minute period, roughly 20 aircraft flew over, several of which were north of where Ingram said they should have been. Ingram lives at the east end of the Boulder Municipal Airport (BDU). Recently, he’s noticed an increase in air traffic from the airport, pushing him to sign a petition that supports closing...

Greg Lopez calls for Republican unity as path to turn Colorado red

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice PUEBLO -- The high stakes of potentially losing the slimmest of margins in the U.S. House of Representatives could be in play if the Colorado Republican Party does not unify, Greg Lopez told delegates today as he addressed the party's assembly here. "It's vital we stand together and make sure we win the election," Lopez said. Various resignations in the House have trimmed the Republican margin to one vote and could put Republican Speakership in jeopardy. He will appear as the Republican nominee in June on the special election ballot for the 4th District. Some have called it a placeholder election to serve six months in Congress, finishing ex-U.S. Rep. Ken Buck's unexpired term. Lopez will be opposed in the special election by a Democra...

Stephen Varela, Ron Hanks emerge as top CO-3 candidates at Colorado Republican Assembly

By Anna Lynn Winfrey, Pueblo Chieftain Democrats have known for a few months that Adam Frisch will again be their candidate to run for Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District seat in the House of Representatives. Republicans, on the other hand, will have at least a few candidates to choose from on primary ballots this November. Incumbent Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert moved over to Colorado's 4th Congressional District to run in the GOP primary for that district rather than participate in a rematch against Frisch. At least two more candidates emerged from the CO-3 assembly, held Friday afternoon at the Southwest Motors Event Center in Pueblo. Here's what to know. READ THE FULL STORY AT PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN

A new plan for the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park: Sell it to the State of Colorado

By Jason Blevins | The Colorado Sun The deal to sell the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park to an Arizona nonprofit has faded, so the state of Colorado is stepping in with a plan to buy the hotel.  The Colorado Educational and Cultural Facilities Authority, which helps nonprofit educational and arts groups fund capital projects, plans to take over ownership of the historic Stanley Hotel.  The authority will take the role as owner after the plan to sell the hotel to Arizona’s Community Finance Corp. fell through. Instead of selling to the Arizona group and taking ownership after as much as $450 million in bonds for renovating and upgrading the hotel are paid back, the Colorado Educational and Cultural Facilities Authority, or CECFA, will create a subsidiary and be...

Pueblo steel mill fire prompts pre-evac notices, triggers air quality concerns

By Mary Shinn | Colorado Springs Gazette A fire broke out Friday afternoon at the EVRAZ steel mill in Pueblo sending up a thick column of black smoke that was blowing north.  The fire triggered a shelter-in-place order and pre-evacuation order for homes near the expansive mill along Interstate 25 on the southern end of town. Pueblo County public health officials issued a public health alert Friday evening, recommending all Pueblo residents stay indoors and avoid outdoor activity through Sunday morning due to the amount of smoke in the air from the EVRAZ fire and the Vision Hills Fire.  The EVRAZ Fire broke out in a building primarily used for staging and storage and all employees evacuated safely, according to a statement from EVRAZ North America. Boebert wins 4th District assembly, qualifies for place on Republican primary ballot

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice PUEBLO -- A week that began with an unexpected surgery ended with a pleasant result for Lauren Boebert. "I didn't care if I had to come here on a stretcher," she said. "I was going to honor the delegates and this valued process in Colorado." Boebert collected 40.8% of delegates here Friday in the 4th District Assembly and earned a spot on the Republican Party's primary ballot for the U.S. House. Jerry Sonnenberg, who was the leading declared primary candidate in the special election meeting but did not advance to that ballot, earned 18.2% of delegates Friday to keep his chances of qualifying for the ballot through petition alive. Richard Holtorf earned 15.4% support, also allowing him the opportunity to potentially qualify for the ball...
