John Fabbricatore details ICE detainee process as state pushes back against federal enforcement

By Alliyah Sims | Fox31 DENVER (KDVR) — FOX31 is learning that 105 people were detained at an underground nightclub bust in Colorado Springs over the weekend. That’s down from the original reported count of 114. The Drug Enforcement Administration said nine people had previous contact with immigration officials. The Colorado Springs Police Department told FOX31 that two people were arrested on existing warrants. One was arrested for a warrant out of Denver for assault, criminal mischief and child abuse. The other was wanted in Adams County for a misdemeanor. John Fabbricatore, former ICE Regional Director, told FOX31 that when there are that many people in custody, the process can take a while, and it really matters where people are going. He said that processing one single ...

Final boarding call: Real ID enforcement begins for U.S. air travel May 7

By Shaul Turner | Fox31 DENVER (KDVR) — The countdown is on for Colorado travelers. On May 7, passengers will need a Real ID symbol on their driver’s license or other form of acceptable identification to get through airport security. Those without proper identification may face delays, additional screening and may not be allowed into the security checkpoint. FOX31 found many travelers at Denver International Airport had questions about Real ID requirements. “I don’t know what is it for,” said one concerned airline passenger. The Real ID Act is the result of the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the federal government set standards for issuing identification. A Transportation Security Administration spokesperson told FOX31 that Colorado, which has been compliant with t...

Aurora’s 3-strike vehicle law: Nearly 1,000 off the streets as crackdown unfolds

By Vicente Arenas | Fox31 AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — Aurora Police Department statistics show 920 vehicles have been impounded under the city’s new three-strikes seizure law. Ward IV Council member Stephanie Hancock sponsored the city’s new traffic law. “I think the concern with our constituents has been, ‘Why are there so many cars with expired tags or no license plates at all on the roads?’ It’s very likely these cars don’t have insurance,” Hancock said. In Aurora, vehicles can be seized when a driver lacks a license, insurance and registration. Pictures of some of the vehicles that have been seized and sold can be seen on the Roller Auction website. When the new law went into effect, FOX31 saw several expired plates in just one location. APD said there are also a...

The letter was sent by the Colorado State Shooting Association, which is the official state association of the National Rifle Association. The groups announced immediately after Gov. Jared Polis signed the bill into law that they would be filing a lawsuit against the measure. “We respectfully request that the Second Amendment Enforcement Task Force launch a thorough investigation into Colorado’s anti-Second Amendment agenda, focusing on the following,” the ...

ACLU targets ICE to block detention facility expansion in Colorado

By Heather Willard | Fox31 DENVER (KDVR) — The American Civil Liberties Union is making Colorado a battleground state against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement as it sues to access what the nonprofit says should be publicly requestable documents. According to the ACLU and the ACLU of Colorado, it all stems from attempts by ICE to expand immigration detention in Colorado and Wyoming. FOX31 learned during an exclusive ride-along with ICE Denver agents earlier this week that there are plans to double the number of available beds for immigration arrests in the Denver area. FOX31 was told the new facility will have at least as many beds as the more than 1,500 beds in the existing Aurora ICE Contract Facility, and said the new facility would likely be located in Hudson and o...
