Wolf dies in Rocky Mountain National Park, federal officials investigating

By Heather Willard | Fox31 DENVER (KDVR) — A second gray wolf introduced to Colorado has died during April, this time inside the boundaries of Rocky Mountain National Park. Colorado Parks and Wildlife said that the female gray wolf’s GPS tracking collar issued a mortality alert on April 20. The wolf was one of the 15 released by CPW earlier this year, brought to the state from British Columbia, Canada. CPW and the National Park Service confirmed the wolf died inside the boundaries of RMNP, and said that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will conduct a necropsy and other investigative efforts because gray wolves are federally listed under the Endangered Species Act. In March, another one of the gray wolves brought to Colorado from Canada was shot and killed by Wildlife Ser...

ICE plans to double the number of jail beds in Denver due to increased arrests in Colorado

By Vicente Arenas | Fox 31 News DENVER (KDVR) — On any given day, even before sunrise, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents say they are on the streets preparing to make arrests in Denver. FOX31 had asked ICE for a ride-along so our crew could witness how agents make arrests. The agency granted that request and allowed FOX31 reporter Vicente Arenas and photographer Eugene Bergman to travel with them as they made arrests on Tuesday morning. Our crew first went to a pre-dawn briefing and a stakeout in Westminster. READ THE FULL STORY AT FOX31 NEWS

With calls up and staffing down, Jeffco sheriff’s office tries new tactics to recruit deputies

By Alliyah Sims | Fox31 JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) —The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office hopes an extra $5,000 will help with recruitment efforts. It’s a part of a new initiative to address staffing shortages. “All law enforcement agencies, police departments, sheriff’s offices — it doesn’t matter. There’s a challenge right now with staffing. It’s been going on really since 2020. A lot of people left the industry and getting more people to apply has been hard for all of us,” Mark Techmeyer, director of Public Affairs with JCSO. He says the sheriff’s office has just around 800 deputies when the agency is fully staffed. “Right now, we’re about 94% staffing for the department overall. We have about 35 openings in our sworn positions. That’s deputies that work in our detent...

$170K in stolen vehicles recovered, 4 arrested in Utah–Colorado theft ring

By Heather Willard | Fox31 DENVER (KDVR) — The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office announced that four people were arrested last week for multiple automobile thefts that crossed the Colorado and Utah border. On April 15, Colorado and Utah law enforcement agencies were able to identify a suspect vehicle in eastern Utah. Law enforcement believed the suspects would return to Colorado in the early hours of April 16 with stolen vehicles. Law enforcement said they believe the suspects have used this tactic several times previously. On April 16, the Colorado State Patrol, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and members of Special Problem Enforcement and Response, a multi-jurisdictional task force based out of Garfield County, located the suspect vehicles entering Colorado. Officers initi...

Lawsuits filed over student visa revocations in Colorado

By Gabrielle Franklin | Fox31 News AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — In reaction to the Trump administration’s decision to terminate the visiting status for dozens of exchange students in Colorado, some of those students are suing the government. The attorney representing the local students said he is concerned that a recent wave of student visa terminations could violate the Constitution. “There are a number of individuals who are here on student status, studying at various universities in Colorado: whether it be Colorado Springs, the University of Colorado, really any of the major universities. There’s been a recent wave of terminations of their student records: their student and exchange visitor information systems records,” said Zachary New, a partner at Joseph and Hall immigration law f...

Colorado families pay 19% more than the national average for groceries

By Spencer Kristensen | Fox31 DENVER (KDVR) — It is a high priority for most U.S. residents and affects the likes of every person in the country, regardless of age — grocery prices. The issue is so pressing that politicians can single-handedly run a campaign on the hot topic. Groceries are essential to single people and families alike, and have a great impact on day-to-day living, and geography can play a large part in determining prices for local goods. Lending Tree, an online lending marketplace, performed a study on how much each state is spending on groceries per year. Lending Tree said researchers compared retail prices provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the weeks ending Jan. 26, 2024, and Jan. 31, 2025, for the 68 fruit and vegetable items that had pric...

Homeless camp cleared in Lakewood after years of complaints and media pressure

By Alliyah Sims | Fox31 LAKEWOOD, Colo. (KDVR) — After nearly two weeks of pushing for answers and two years of neighbors dealing with a growing homeless encampment at the 6th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard interchange in Lakewood, crews cleared the site Wednesday. Mounting trash, fires being started, needles found in neighbors’ backyards, and contamination in a waterway that feeds into the Platte River were all big concerns. Cleanup started around 9 a.m. on Wednesday and lasted about 8 hours. Brett Charbonneau, the neighbor who contacted FOX31, was amazed that there was finally some action. Charbonneau and his neighbor Bob Emulengracht were relieved after watching crews clear out the encampment site near their neighborhoods. “The first thing I want to say is thanks to ...

Clear Creek County sheriff strives for change in his office after former deputy sentencing

By Nate Belt | Fox 31 News IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo. (KDVR) — Former Clear Creek County deputy Andrew Buen will spend the next three years behind bars, officially sentenced Monday morning after being convicted of criminally negligent homicide in the death of Christian Glass nearly three years ago. Clear Creek County Sheriff Matthew Harris says while they still have a ways to go, he’s confident his office is on the right track to making sure something like this doesn’t happen again thanks to many policy changes made since Glass’s death. “We as an organization understand the tragic nature of what happened,” said Harris. That’s why he said things needed to change in his office. “We issued over 200 brand new policies in the last year,” said Harris. Policies to better hold dep...

Immigrant protection bill passes committee, limits law enforcement cooperation with feds

By Gabrielle Franklin | Fox31 DENVER (KDVR) — A bill meant to better protect immigrants under Colorado law passed through a Colorado Senate committee Tuesday. Supporters of the bill say it looks to ensure everyone’s civil rights are protected regardless of immigration status, while opponents argue it further prohibits the state from helping federal agents. “Fear is contagious, isolating and destructive. We’ve seen President Trump weaponize fear time and time again against immigrants. Donald Trump’s ICE agents say one thing and then they do another,” said state Senator Julie Gonzales when talking about who the administration is targeting for deportations through Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. A newly introduced bill at the state capitol covers a lot of ter...

$3.2M Denver 17th Street tower deal aims to create 750 downtown apartments

By Maddie Rhodes | Fox31 DENVER (KDVR) — A block in downtown Denver is converting from offices into apartment spaces after a real estate company bought two towers on 17th Street. The Luzzatto Company, a national real estate firm, purchased 621 and 633 17th St. at the start of April for $3.2 million, hoping to revitalize downtown with the over 973,000 square feet of space in the heart of Denver. Right now, it’s a handful of offices and a grassy area just outside the 16th Street Mall, but company owner Asher Luzzatto said it’s going through a complete renovation that will cost between $150 and $200 million. Within three years, Luzzatto said the company is planning 700 to 750 multi-family affordable apartment units. The company plans to include public and private spaces with a day...
