Summer skeeters: New mosquito species, the Aedes aegypti, found in Grand Junction

By Timber Schuman | Fox 31 News A new mosquito species was discovered in Grand Junction –the Aedes aegypti. Grand River Mosquito Control District Manager Tim Moore told Nexstar’s WesternSlopeNow that only two of these mosquitoes were found in Grand Junction in 2023, and this June, three Colorado Mesa University students found several more — 12 adults and 150 eggs. Officials are not sure if they’re permanently established. The Aedes aegypti will live its whole two-to-four-week lifespan within 50 feet of where it hatched, unlike the Culex mosquito commonly seen in Mesa County, which will travel miles over its lifetime. By Julian Resendiz | Fox 31 News Federal officials in El Paso have relinquished custody of an alleged Tren de Aragua gang member they say is linked to a violent June 24 jewelry store robbery in Denver. Homeland Security Investigations special agents in Las Cruces, New Mexico, last week turned over the suspect to Denver County Sheriff’s Department staff for transfer to Colorado. HSI said the man is a Venezuelan national, a member of the Tren de Aragua transnational criminal organization and a “suspect in the June 24 Denver jewelry heist.” The brutal robbery caught on video shows several young men posing as clients suddenly turn on the all-female staff and clients. Montana-based ‘Super Scooper’ aircraft deployed to fight Colorado wildfires

By Gabby Easterwood | Fox 31 News Several wildfires are burning along Colorado’s Front Range, and they’re getting assists from all over the country — including the unique “Super Scooper” planes from Bridger Aerospace. These aircraft arrived in Colorado Thursday and were initially helping the fight against the Quarry Fire in Jefferson County but has since been deployed to the fires north in Boulder and Larimer counties. When FOX31 got to tour one of the planes and talk to a crew, it was stationed in Centennial. What does the containment percentage mean for wildfires?

By Brooke Williams | Fox 31 News Several wildfires are burning thousands of acres in Colorado. And while some have not shown significant growth, they remain at low levels of containment after days of firefighting. As of Friday morning, the Alexander Mountain Fire that started Monday has burned over 9,000 acres and is 5% contained, up from 0% on Thursday. The deadly Stone Canyon Fire that started Tuesday afternoon is at 1,553 acres and 30% contained. The Quarry Fire, which started Tuesday and authorities are investigating as arson, has burned more than 400 acres. It was 0% contained until Friday morning when fire crews reported 4% containment. Following successful pilot program, RTD rides now permanently free for those 19 and younger

The RTD Board of Directors voted unanimously Tuesday night to continue the program after the one-year pilot, which began on Sept. 1 and was scheduled to end Aug. 31. The transit agency touted the benefits of the program, saying schools reported a reduction in truancy while young people were given transit to work and extracurricular activities without worry about fare costs. “Zero Fare for Youth is helping RTD’s youngest customers understand how their new habits are aiding air quality in their communities and supporting their freedom to explore and gain independence,” RTD General Manager and CEO Debra A. The two grocery store chains announced their plans to merge, however, this was met with much controversy as many said this would create a monopoly. In February, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission sued to block the $24.6 billion merger between the grocery chains, saying the lack of competition would lead to higher grocery prices and lower wages for workers. Many departments across the state are allowing cowboy hats as part of the uniform. Deputies in Boulder and Arapahoe County posted about the new look earlier this year.
