Affidavit: Anti-violence activist arrested in suspected revenge killing

By Morgan Whitley | Fox 31 News A well-known anti-violence advocate was arrested in connection to a deadly shooting at a Commerce City park in what detectives are investigating as retaliation for his son’s shooting death a year prior. Lumumba Sayers Sr., 46, was arrested in connection to the shooting that left one dead at Pioneer Park on Saturday. Sayers Sr. founded the Aurora-based nonprofit Heavy Hands Heavy Hearts, which is aimed at helping young people in the community. 11 puppies euthanized after 1 tests positive for rabies

By Rachel Saurer | Fox 31 News  Since a puppy at an adoption event in Sheridan tested positive for rabies last month, 11 puppies have been euthanized. The positive puppy came to Colorado from Texas and was at a July 20 puppy adoption event at Moms and Mutts Colorado, a rescue for pregnant and nursing dogs. “We have adoption events every Saturday, and so it was a pretty normal day. Three weekend shootings in Commerce City resulted in four deaths

By Heather Willard | Fox 31 News Three violent incidents that led to four deaths were all reported out of Commerce City this weekend, starting Friday at about 8 p.m. Police said none of the events were related, and the locations ranged across the city. Joanna Small, Commerce City Police Department public information officer, said the fact that they are isolated incidents makes the weekend all the more unusual. Small also noted that Commerce City, on average, sees a handful of deadly shootings each year. Pilot errors blamed for Osprey crash that killed Colorado Marine, 2 others

By TARA COPP | Associated Press, via Fox 31 News An Osprey crash in Australia that killed three Marines, including one from Colorado, was caused by multiple pilot errors during a near mid-air collision, a military investigation has found. It also found that squadron leadership had permitted “a culture that disregarded safety of flight.” Two Marines pilots were killed by the Aug. 27 crash: Capt. Eleanor V. LeBeau, 29, and Maj. Tobin J. Lewis, 37, who was born and raised in Conifer, Colorado. A third Marine, crew chief Cpl. Spencer R. Collart, 21, was killed as he “heroically re-entered the burning cockpit of the aircraft in an attempt to rescue the trapped pilots,” the investigators said in a report released late Friday. Forest Service: Alexander Mountain fire that burned nearly 10,000 acres was human-caused

By Maddie Rhodes | Fox 31 News On Friday, the U.S. Forest Service said the Alexander Mountain Fire that burned almost 10,000 acres was determined to be human-caused. The Alexander Mountain Fire in Larimer County was the largest of the recent Colorado fires, sparking in late July and burning 9,668 acres. While it’s almost at full containment after over a week, it destroyed or damaged 52 structures and caused hundreds of evacuations. Wildland fire investigators and the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office are following leads, and investigators are asking anyone with information to call the Forest Service Law Enforcement Tip Line at 303-275-5266. Grand River Mosquito Control District Manager Tim Moore told Nexstar’s WesternSlopeNow that only two of these mosquitoes were found in Grand Junction in 2023, and this June, three Colorado Mesa University students found several more — 12 adults and 150 eggs. Officials are not sure if they’re permanently established. The Aedes aegypti will live its whole two-to-four-week lifespan within 50 feet of where it hatched, unlike the Culex mosquito commonly seen in Mesa County, which will travel miles over its lifetime. Homeland Security Investigations special agents in Las Cruces, New Mexico, last week turned over the suspect to Denver County Sheriff’s Department staff for transfer to Colorado. Montana-based ‘Super Scooper’ aircraft deployed to fight Colorado wildfires

These aircraft arrived in Colorado Thursday and were initially helping the fight against the Quarry Fire in Jefferson County but has since been deployed to the fires north in Boulder and Larimer counties. When FOX31 got to tour one of the planes and talk to a crew, it was stationed in Centennial. What does the containment percentage mean for wildfires?

And while some have not shown significant growth, they remain at low levels of containment after days of firefighting. As of Friday morning, the Alexander Mountain Fire that started Monday has burned over 9,000 acres and is 5% contained, up from 0% on Thursday. The deadly Stone Canyon Fire that started Tuesday afternoon is at 1,553 acres and 30% contained. The Quarry Fire, which started Tuesday and authorities are investigating as arson, has burned more than 400 acres. It was 0% contained until Friday morning when fire crews reported 4% containment.
