Fake nursing home was used to smuggle illegal immigrants into country

By Stephen Dinan  | The Washington Times Border Patrol agents were miffed when they saw an ambulance roll up to a Texas highway checkpoint in August 2022 and discovered an illegal immigrant being smuggled inside. Now, nearly two years later, authorities say that ambulance was part of a broader smuggling operation that involved a fake assisted living facility that was supposedly moving patients from one location to another. In reality, the patients on the gurneys were illegal immigrants, according to investigators. Jesus Cantu-Trevino was arrested by the Texas Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and U.S. Homeland Security and charged with conspiracy to commit alien smuggling. Undocumented immigrants are barred from buying guns in the U.S., however, the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) is not required to alert U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or local law enforcement if a firearm applicant is in America illegally. The Illegal Alien NICS Alert Act, authored by Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and co-sponsored by Sens. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., John Boozman, R-Ark, and Thom Tillis, R-N.C., would change the system. Gallup poll: Immigration again tops list of most important problems in US

The poll found that 27 percent of Americans said the most important issue facing the country right now is immigration — marking the longest consecutive period in Gallup polling that immigration has been a top issue in the U.S. Twenty-eight percent of Americans said both in February and in March that immigration was the most important problem in the country. February marked the first-time immigration was listed as a top concern since 2019, according to the Gallup poll at the time. The proposed budget cuts' next stop is the full City Council.     The budget cuts include a hiring freeze and service reductions. Early in the crisis, Denver officials decided the city would assume the responsibility to temporarily house, feed and transport arriving immigrants. By Alex Edwards | Colorado Politics Denver taxpayers are on the hook for $90 million this fiscal year to pay for the city's response to the illegal immigration crisis that has been spilling over into America's interior cities from the southern border.  That's the latest estimate from Denver Mayor Mike Johnston’s administration, which earlier said the city was poised to spend $180 million on the crisis and revised that number down to $120 million. Early in the crisis, Denver officials decided the city would assume the responsibility to temporarily house, feed and transport arriving immigrants. El Paso County to consider suing state of Colorado over ‘unconstitutional’ immigration laws

Breeanna Jent | Colorado Springs Gazette El Paso County could join a lawsuit against the state of Colorado, challenging laws that stop local governments from cooperating with the federal government in certain matters of immigration. The Board of El Paso County Commissioners at its regular meeting Tuesday will consider a resolution authorizing litigation against the state. If approved, the county would officially object to two state bills passed in 2019 and 2023 that prohibit local law enforcement, including the El Paso County sheriff, from arresting or detaining individuals based on a civil immigration detainer.
