6 important things to know about Denver’s migrant crisis

By Jennifer Brown | Colorado Sun Almost 40,000 migrants have come to Denver in the past 15 months, a number that’s become hard to comprehend.  “To put that in context, that’s Coors Field on a Saturday night in July when the Dodgers are in town,” said Jon Ewing, spokesman for Denver Human Services, during this week’s Colorado Sun virtual event on the migrant crisis. “You look to your left, you look to your right, up and down, and almost every seat is full. That’s the number of people that we’ve cared for over the last year.” Here’s what you should know about how Denver is handling all this and what’s in store longer term. Elon Musk criticizes program that flew 320,000 ‘unvetted’ illegal immigrants into America

By Shannon Thaler | New York Post Elon Musk ripped President Joe Biden’s administration for secretly flying 320,000 “unvetted” migrants into the US, signaling that “the groundwork is being laid for something far worse than 9/11.” Musk issued the grave warning on X Tuesday, noting that it’s “just a matter of time” that the US faces another terrorist attack of that magnitude. “This administration is both importing voters and creating a national security threat from unvetted illegal immigrants,” Musk added in the post. “This is why groups on the far left fight so hard to stop voter ID requirements, under the absurd guise of protecting the right to vote,” the billionaire Tesla CEO said in a subsequent post that doubled down on his stance. Denver to close four shelters for illegal immigrants, starting with Aurora

By By Bennito L. Kelty | Westword The migrant crisis in Denver is Mayor Mike Johnston's biggest challenge so far in 2024. Since December 2022, more than 39,000 migrants, mostly from Venezuela, have shown up in Denver. To the tune of $58 million — all funded by local taxes — the City of Denver has either put them in hotels converted to shelters or bused them to other locations. For Denver to keep housing, transporting and feeding migrants through 2024, Johnston had predicted the city would need $180 million. To slash $60 million off that figure, he announced today, February 28, that the city will close four of its ten migrant shelters during the next month, at a rate of one per week. The mayor clarified that "no one is being displaced from these shelters, no one's length-of...

‘Newcomers’: The Biden Administration’s new word for illegal immigrants

By Paul Bedard | Colorado Springs Gazette Critics of President Joe Biden’s open borders agenda that has seen millions of illegal immigrants cross into the United States today ripped his characterization of them as simply “newcomers.” To complement his visit to the Texas border today, the White House released highlights of the unpassable comprehensive border legislation in the Senate. In it, they wrote, “The bill also includes $1.4 billion for cities and states who are providing critical services to newcomers, and would expedite work permits for people who are in the country and qualify.” The reaction to calling those here illegally as “newcomers” in a week when one has been charged in the brutal beating death of a Georgia nursing student was swift onl...

Aurora to local governments, nonprofits: Don’t bring immigrants in without coordinating

By Kyla Pearce | Denver Gazette The Aurora council approved a resolution on Monday night telling other local governments or nonprofits entities to not bring immigrants — who ended up in metro Denver after illegally crossing America's southern border — into Colorado's third most populous city. The vote followed disagreement among councilmembers and criticism from some residents who attended the meeting. The resolution's sponsors later made changes in response to feedback from nonprofits and community members.  As amended, the resolution affirms Aurora's "non-sanctuary" status, asserting that the city "does not currently have the financial capacity to fund new services related to this crisis." Garfield County commissioners deny Carbondale’s funding request to assist in migrant response

By Taylor Cramer  | Post Independent In a unanimous decision on Tuesday, Garfield County Commissioners denied the town of Carbondale’s request for $50,000 in aid to support groups of recently arrived immigrants who have been relying on the town for temporary shelter since November.  Approximately 150 immigrants, mostly Venezuelans, arrived in Carbondale seeking shelter and employment. These newcomers, discovered living under the Carbondale entrance bridge and in various precarious situations on Nov. 4, were part of a larger group migration in search for stability in the face of economic and legal uncertainties. The town of Carbondale previously received $223,800 from a Department of Local Affairs grant and has been actively responding to the needs of these newcomers. This fun...

Mesa County is not illegal immigrant sanctuary, commissioners declare in letter, resolution

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice The solution to Denver’s illegal immigrant crisis cannot be transferring responsibility to other municipalities and governments, Mesa County commissioners said Tuesday. Commissioners have passed a resolution and written a letter to Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, clarifying Mesa County as a non-sanctuary county. “We appreciate Denver's efforts to address the complex and sensitive immigration issues, but we must be clear and communicate Mesa County's inability to extend aid,” the letter reads. “Our decision stems not from a lack of empathy or understanding, but from fiscal responsibility and the constraints and challenges we face within our jurisdiction.” Mesa County’s resources are strained by an estimated population of 2,300 homeless, a popul...

Denver has helped 40,000 migrants while Colorado Springs counts 24 families. Does being a sanctuary city matter that much?

By Jennifer Brown | Colorado Sun El Paso County commissioners, voices amplified by a microphone, left no room for misinterpretation: Migrants are not welcome in Colorado Springs.  “Keep going. Find a sanctuary city,” Commissioner Carrie Geitner said two weeks ago during a hastily called news conference after a few South American migrants arrived at a church-run shelter. “They asked for those folks to come to their cities. Find one of those. That’s where they should go.” About a week later and an hour up the highway, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston was quoting from the Statue of Liberty: “Please, send us your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” he said, even as he announced budget cuts brought on by housing and feeding migrants. “These are folks yearning to breathe ...

Hickenlooper plays politics with border security

By Colorado Peak Politics What we have here is a failure to communicate. Senate advances military aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan https://t.co/HM0fEz0TFI— Caitlyn Kim (@caitlynkim) February 13, 2024 When Democrats say they want border security, what they mean is Joe and Jody Taxpayer need to cough up more money by the billions to pay for an entire new infrastructure to keep borders open and migrants pouring through by the millions. When Republicans say they want border security, what they mean is Joe Biden needs to reverse his policies abusing immigration policies to allow migrants by the millions to pour through the border. And, fix the border wall where drug dealers, criminals, terrorists and human traffickers lurk. The solution to an out-of-control migrant cri...
