No Signatures, No Recall: Aurora DA Stays in Office

By Heather Willard | KDVR Fox31 DENVER (KDVR) — An effort to recall a Colorado district attorney whose office prosecuted an attempted kidnapping case at an elementary school that ended with the suspect walking free due to competency issues has failed. The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office and 18th Judicial District Attorney Amy Padden both confirmed that as of Tuesday night’s deadline, no signatures on the petition to recall Padden from office had been turned in. The petition needed 75,875 registered Arapahoe County voters to trigger the recall election, Padden said. In July, Aurora City Councilwoman Danielle Jurinsky announced she was launching a campaign to try and remove Padden from office after registered sex offender Carmen Galligan walked free. Galligan was charged in con...

Lakewood Officials Push Back on “Single-Family” Claims Amid Zoning Overhaul

By Sage Kelley | The Denver Gazette Changes being made to Lakewood’s zoning code have raised questions and ire throughout the community, especially when it comes to the city’s single-family residential districts. Residents have said they want to retain their single-family home neighborhoods. The city never had single-family only residential zoning, according to Mayor Wendi Strom. “The city’s current zone districts often associated mostly with single-family homes already allow several of the following uses: duplexes, group homes, accessory dwelling uses, animal care businesses, bed-and-breakfasts, etc. Lakewood doesn’t currently have a zone district where only single-family home use is allowed,” Strom said in a statement following the 9-2 approval of the zoning changes at a City...

Evergreen students return to school surrounded by community support

By Sage Kelley | The Denver Gazette Evergreen High School students returned to campus on Thursday morning, two weeks after a shooting shocked the small town. Parents stood on the sideline, holding signs of support. More than 100 posters from Colorado cities, spanning from Telluride to Steamboat Springs, lined the school’s halls, sharing condolences and words of encouragement. “It was difficult, for sure,” Tyler Guyton, a senior and one of two student body presidents, said. “For the past week, people have been trying to ignore it, but it’s hard to ignore it when you’re back in the school and see the posters on the wall, the new tiles and all that stuff.” The staff had returned to the school Monday. Thursday and Friday are “gradual” days for the students, with classes onl...

Police released a photo of the suspect taken from security cameras. In the photo, he appears to be white with dark hair. He’s sporting a beard and tattoos on his biceps on both arms, as well as his back. He’s wearing all black, with a black hat, shirt, pants and shoes. He also has what appears to be a silver chain around his neck with som...

Fire Destroys Loveland Family’s Tribute to Charlie Kirk

By KDVR Staff | KDVR Fox 31 LOVELAND, Colo. (KDVR) — Vandals burned a Loveland family’s memorial to Turning Point USA CEO Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed on Wednesday, Sept. 10, during a tour event at Utah Valley University. The family is not releasing their location or full names due to concern for their safety. They told FOX31 the vandals set the fence on fire at approximately 11:15 p.m. as five children slept inside the home. “When they burnt that fence, that fire could’ve went into that house and it could’ve really harmed somebody,” said one family friend. The vandals also smashed the back window of the family’s SUV. “It’s the rhetoric, it’s what people are being fed, there’s so much hate in this world and we need to stop,” said the children’s father. Friends ru...

Drawing Nearer to God: An Average Joe’s 7-Part Journey of Faith

By Scott K. James | Commentary, ScottKJames.com Drawing nearer to God sounds great – but how do ordinary believers actually do it? Join this 7-part Scott Sheet Sunday series to find out. Last Sunday, my pastor said something that’s stuck with me all week. He talked about “drawing nearer to God in times of trouble.” That sounds amazing, doesn’t it? Poetic. Comforting. Instagram-worthy. But here’s the question I couldn’t shake: how, exactly, do I do that? Because if you’re anything like me, you’ve heard these phrases in church for years. “Seek God.” “Pursue His presence.” “Draw near to Him.” They roll off the tongue like we all have a built-in GPS that beeps every time we’re taking a step closer to the Almighty. But let’s be honest: most of us are just Average Joes and Ja...

$12K in tools stolen from Colorado contractor’s van: Reward offered

By Shaul Turner | Fox 31 WESTMINSTER, Colo. (KDVR) — Sewer analysis and repair tools valued at more than $12,000 were stolen from a business’s van right next to the busy intersection of Lowell Boulevard and 68th Street in Westminster. Security video obtained by FOX31 shows a man boldly unloading the tools from an Our Drain and Sewer Company van in an apartment parking lot. The case is still being investigated, but one employee is hoping someone will come forward with more information. Ron Patin tells FOX31 a maintenance worker notified him that someone had broken into the van just after 3 a.m. on July 28. “You can see the guy hopping out of the van, dropping our stuff on the ground, picking it up like it was no big deal,” he said. Patin says the thief took brand...

Labor Day Protest At Capitol Draws Small Crowd Targeting Trump and Billionaires

By Danielle Kreutter | Denver7 The event was organized by the group 50501, which also organized the No Kings Day protest back in June. DENVER — Hundreds of demonstrators spent their Labor Day rallying for workers' rights at the Colorado Capitol. The event was organized by the group 50501, which also organized the No Kings Day protest back in June. The group held two marches: one through downtown Denver, where people held signs criticizing the Trump administration's affiliations with billionaires and other policies, and another to the Governor's Mansion, where people dropped off letters of various personal concerns. The focus of the event was to support labor rights, but 50501 also collaborated with several community groups — some political, some not. Booths were set up to co...

Vandalism spree in Uptown Denver garage leaves cars disabled

By Nicole Fierro | Fox 31 DENVER (KDVR) — An entire floor of residents at an uptown apartment complex tells FOX31 they woke up to their tires slashed in their parking garage. Now, residents are left wondering who’s responsible and how they’re going to get around. “I woke up to a phone call and pounding on the door saying, ‘Hey, tires or vehicles have been dealt with and we don’t know who and we don’t know how many,’” one resident said, speaking about how neighbors at the Benedect Park Place woke her up with the news about a series of slashed tires in their garage. From work to doctors’ appointments, residents tell FOX31 they couldn’t get to where they needed to Wednesday morning.  “Now I have four flat tires,” Tanya Hall said. “I can’t even go look for a new j...

Denver’s first citywide furlough day: Here’s what’s open and closed

By Heather Willard | Fox31 DENVER (KDVR) — The city of Denver’s budget hole will impact residents on Friday during the first of two citywide furlough days. The city will close its libraries, recreation centers, courts and the majority of its offices on both Friday and Monday. Monday’s closures are due to the Labor Day holiday, while Friday’s are due to the citywide furlough day spurred by the city’s budget, which faced a $200 million gap. The furlough days come after the city and county laid off 169 employees and cut another 665 unfilled positions, while also implementing tiered furlough day schedules based on pay grade. A second citywide furlough day is scheduled for Nov. 28 — Black Friday. These Denver offices will be open Aug. 29, Sept. 1 The Denver Animal ...
